SW machining center becomes plug & play-capable total solution thanks to newly developed loading component with integrated robot and workpiece magazine.

Production cells with workpiece supply for one shift are used in many areas of the machining of complex workpieces – from the automotive industry to medical and precision engineering. However, many automation solutions to date are 2-part systems that require a great deal of time and expense to integrate into the process chain. To avoid this in the future, Schwäbische Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH (SW), an expert in sophisticated, workpiece-specific manufacturing systems for metalworking, has designed two new plug-&-play manufacturing cells that significantly shorten the commissioning time at the customer’s site: The systems consist of the proven BA 222 machine tool and the BA W02-22, respectively, as well as a newly developed loading module with integrated 6-axis robot and vertical pallet storage for raw and finished parts.

The module enables loading and unloading of the machining center during machining and is completely flanged to the basic machine at the SW factory. The machine, robot and workpiece storage system are designed specifically for the customer as a crane hook solution, and the ceiling mounting of the robot also provides more freedom of movement. The workpiece storage is laterally offset and thus also enables manual workpiece loading of the machine with low space requirements. In addition, a production cell with loading module is planned for the BAZ model BA 322.

Self-sufficient manufacturing cells ensure both high availability and easily scalable production capacity, thus reducing production costs. “They are particularly well suited if a company is increasingly relying on multi-machine operation, meaning that one employee is responsible for several machines,” says Wolfgang Armleder, head of development at SW. “In addition, the self-sufficient cells can be used when quality and process data must be reliably traced. Due to their always identical deposition pattern and the plannable ejection of SPC measured parts, loading modules offer the best prerequisite for this.”
